I had a child, a woman today.
I saw the best part of myself in her.
Pernicious time managed to discover
even how to snatch her from me, and she sees
the root of her troubles in me, does not turn
her blue eye on me with the old fondness.
All taken from me by the abject Fascist
and the gluttonous German.
I had a beautiful city between the rocky
hills and the shining sea. Mine because
I was born there, mine more than othersâ because
I discovered it as a boy, and as an adult
wed it to Italy with my song forever.
One had to live. And therefore I chose
among evils the most dignified: the small
rare bookshop of antiquarian texts.
All taken from me by the inept Fascist
and the gluttonous German.
